What does it mean to be human? It is an age old question that our ancestors pondered upon and now the students of the Gifted and Talented Seminar are on a quest to find the answer.

What Does it Mean to be Human?
The moment I started writing this post, I looked at the World Population Clock and it said that the current human population is 6,857,804,277. That is how many humans there are. 6,857,804,277 that will live a life, short or long, in prosperity or poverty, going through the human experience. But what does it mean exactly to be human? Well, there's going to be 6,857,804,277 answers to that question but in the current unit we are learning about in Gifted and Talented will hopefully guide my way to a genuine answer. I want to be able to answer that question. By the way, at the end of this post, I looked back at the population clock, and there will now be 6,857,805,348 answers to the question, "What does it mean to be human?"

Am I the only one who is frightened by the World Population Clock? Almost 7 BILLION people are on this Earth, and who knows how they will impact our lives some day? The thought makes me uneasy, so I won't dwell on it.. Ronak, I like how you phrased everything about this post but I have a question for you: does not knowing how these people are going to live their lives make you want to know/ want to help them live?
ReplyDeleteHannah I agree! 7 Billion people in the world is a huge number but it is way bigger than my mind can grasp. When you look even further into it, you see the number of people in poverty and people battling life threating diseases. I think of them all having different types of hope especially from the kind some of us experience. They want to live another day and struggle everyday to do so but we never really have to think about it or hope for another day because we are not in those horrible situations.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hannah and Simran; this clock is intimidating. It makes me feel very, very small. Ronak, what do you think your first step will be in tackling the question, "What does it mean to be human?"
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with all of you. The number is intimidating. I feel sometimes, how can one person make a difference? You know, I want to know/help people in need but that number does make me feel really small. But JFK once said, "One person can make a difference and every person should try". The first step I will take in tackling the question is I want to learn how we have evolved as a social being from the beginning of human history. How have we been interacting with eachother since the beginning of time and how have we evolved.
